Interim: Job shadowing
Job shadowing
On October 1st and 2nd i had the amazing opportunity to job shadow Vanesa PortiIIo, she is a Cosmetologist and is currently working in Snowmass at Snowmass Village Salon. On the first day i was asking her a lot questions i was wondering where she went to school, when she graduated, and why she decided to become a cosmetologist. I was wondering if it was a hard career to have in life, which colleges did she go to, and did she even go to college. All my questions were answered on both days. On tuesday when we both went in and opened the beauty shop she started to get calls after calls, of men and women making appointments to go in. The beauty shop is pretty small, but its two rooms. Her boss loves Africa and has portraits of lions, and elephants all over. It really makes you feel comfortable, even though they have no TV. On tuesday she worked from 9am-2pm, all that time she was really busy. She did pedicures, hair cuts, highlights, and even had time to do my nails! She gave me a manicure for free which is worth $30.00 where she works. While i was looking at their list of prices i noticed that it was very expensive, but then again she doesn't get paid by the hour, she gets paid depending on how many clients she has. So say she only gets 1 client per day, then thats what she gets paid that whole entire day. On wednesday we both went in from 10am-2pm but that was only because she had to go in and do a guys highlights, and give him a haircut. She wasn’t suppose to work that day but she had around 3 appointments. The guy with the highlights never showed up and she had to charge him through his credit card. At Snowmass Village Salon they have a really strict policy, and it is that if you show up late within 3-4 hours after your appointment you will be charged for whatever purpose the appointment was. After those two days her job made me realize that becoming a Cosmetologist is something that i really want to focus on once i graduate highschool. On thursday i went in to my dads work and saw how he ran his own business. Owning a restaurant is a lot of work, especially being a cook too. Seeing my dad work from 11am-4pm was crazy. He was busy at all times, cutting fresh vegetables, making quick orders, later going to get coke from the Coca-Cola company, ordering food products, paying all these crazy bills. I felt like my dads job was way too stressful for me, i don't think i would ever run my own restaurant and still be such a nice parent. After shadowing my dad i gained way more respect for him because i put myself in his shoes and just picturing myself in his situations is insane. On my last day of Interim me and 4 other students went to see some colleges in Grand Junction, which was lots of fun. We got to take a tour of Mesa State, which was a really big campus, they had an enormous pool, so many gyms, and everything was located pretty nice. We also got to see Intellitec Institute which was also really cool, being able to go in and check out the class rooms was interesting, seeing all the hands on equipment they had seemed fun. Overall my Interim week was really fun and interesting, being able to see how other people work and how the real world really is, is something everyone should experience.
